Elegant School Clothes

The Twilight Girls takes place at a boarding school for girls. Thus, the uniforms worn by the students are a large part of the film. The main character, Catherine, makes an elegant first appearance in the opening credits of the film. Though she isn't yet wearing her school-wide enforced uniform, this is what she chooses to wear to make an impression on the administration.

Her sleek monochrome suit had a defined waist with a modest neckline, letting her mock turtleneck peek through. The skirt hits below the knee, also a modest touch, and is fitted all the way down her legs. She wears gloves and a pillbox hat- creating the elegant silhouette I referred to. This outfit opens up the film, and the viewer is immediately taken to the late '50s.

Once she joins her classmates, all of the girls are wearing the previously alluded uniforms.

As you can see, all of the girls are wearing below-the-knee skirts and a prim blouse, belted at the natural waist, and a slim tie. The beret is the head-wear of choice, and moderately heeled loafers are worn by every girl. This, again, highlights the importance of femininity in womenswear and flattering the female form. Take a closer look below.

In gym class, the students are now dressed in another ensemble, yet still uniforms. The '50s was when gym class in schools became a norm, so the gym class scene, even though brief, is a large part of the film.

Take note of the bloomers and fitted t-shirts worn by every student, as well as the white tennis sneakers. Also, though unrelated to fashion, the type of exercise they are participating in is a sign of the decade. While the men ran track and played baseball (think of Grease), the girls stretched and did very light workouts.
